How long will it take to learn?
A half day or day long workshop will give you a good foundation to start from as will three individual lessons. However, Danny Dreyer, the founder of ChiRunning describes learning the technique as being like learning Yoga or T’ai Chi—something you practice constantly rather than learn in a day, week, or month. A workshop or some lessons is the start of a lifelong learning process. For this reason, it is good to attend workshops or have lessons to ‘top up’ your learning especially when you are just starting to learn ChiRunning.
Is it possible to learn from the book or DVD?
Whilst you can learn the principles from the book and DVD, it is worthwhile attending a workshop or taking individual lessons to check that you have got the technique right. We find it particularly useful to examine video of runners in order to analyze technique.
What will I learn in ChiRunning workshops/lessons and how will it help my running?
You will learn to:-
· Keep your core muscles engaged and your arms and legs relaxed when you are running. The more relaxed you are the less likely you are to get injured.
· Run more efficiently by using gravity to move you forwards rather than pushing yourself forwards with your legs.
· Lean with good posture, lift your heels and land mid foot in order to prevent heel striking and impact on knees, hips and back.
· Use your arms efficiently.
· Keep your legs turning over quickly to reduce the time spent on the ground which reduces injury and increases speed.
· Use exercises that you can practice anywhere no matter what you’re doing which will improve your running technique.
· Relax and enjoy your running.
If I were to take individual lessons how many would I need?
We would recommend booking three one hour lessons initially. Everyone is starting from a different point and learns at different speeds but three lessons is about right for most people. However, one lesson would give a good introduction to the technique. We would also recommend that everyone has ‘top up’ lessons from time to time.
